Strathblane and Blanefield Village Club

Join Max Johnson on 4 consecutive Tuesday evenings as we practice the ancient craft of basketry, gradually building skills and knowledge over the course of 4 weeks, during which time you’ll make (and take home) the following:

Week 1 (23/5/23): Tension trays (useful as a fruit platter or trivet) – get to know your materials, learn simple weaves like randing and pairing, and the glamorously named technique of ‘smearing’.

Week 2 (30/5/23): Fat ball Bird feeders – further developing pairing skills, and an introduction to waling, borders and simple handles.

Weeks 3 and 4 (6/6 and 13/6/23): A round basket – using and developing many of the skills listed above you’ll weave a round basket suitable for storing/presenting things such as bread, fruit or eggs.

All tools and materials will be provided. This is a fun, relaxed introduction to weaving, with no prior experience necessary. Please be aware that joint problems like arthritis can make weaving challenging, however it is still possible!
