Portobello Community Choir invite you to join them in learning and singing Weave the Willow, a basket making work song written by Jane Lewis that weaves in many basketry terms.
Using entirely UK willows, many grown regeneratively in Scotland, Anna makes functional and decorative works drawing on traditional baskets and heritage weaving skills. Baskets, homeware, jewellery and plant supports for sale. Working Studio with all the tools!
Nature and history pass through Anna’s hands as she weaves using willow she grows, cuts, sorts and prepares herself. Anna makes beatiful baskets incorporating colourful organic homegrown willows, based on tradtional baskets of the British Isles. She enjoys the superior functionality of these styles, having been developed for hard use over hundreds of years in conjunction with the human body.
Anna is largely self taught and came to basketry through willow growing, inspired by its zero carbon footprint. In more recent years she has received funding to train with leading British basketmakers to learn specific heritage British agricultural/ measuring baskets and develop her work creatively. She exhibits and teaches nationally and locally.
Anna aims to contrast the dappled hues of the different willow barks within her work. Through the year, the affection for the material carries on through the work. The baskets are things of beauty; sturdy and precise.
