Willow Work

18th to 23rd October 2026.

Gartmore, Stirling.

This is an opportunity to spend four days under Jane Allan’s expert tuition, in lovely surroundings, creating functional baskets in traditional styles from willow. You will be guided through the techniques of basketry and the use of simple hand tools. All you need to bring is enthusiasm and strong hands.

The course is aimed at beginners but may also be suitable for those with some experience. We will begin with a simple basket to introduce you to the material and allow me to see what you may be capable of making.

For this course we will be concentrating on Frame Basketry which involves building a basket on a framework of hoops and ribs. This is a versatile technique which allows a wide range of shapes and sizes while using the same simple weave.

If time allows, there may be an opportunity to make other simple, decorative items such as bird feeders, stars or swifts and fish.
