Asymmetric Willow Basket Workshop

Nov 16th 2025.

Fletcher Hall, East Saltoun, East Lothian.

Learn how to make an asymmetric willow basket with a wooden handle with East Lothian Basket maker Jilly Greig. Some experience needed.

This wonderful basket is a few steps on from a simple round basket. If you have basket weaving experience, and can construct a round base, then this is the basket for you. A little tricky for total beginners.

After weaving the round base, you will be inserting the uprights and weaving the sides in different weaves, before finishing the top off with the asymmetric border. Bring along a good strong and interesting stick about 1.5 inches in diameter and 1ft long if you would like to add your own choice of stick. Jilly will have some spares if you don’t have one though.

The stick will be tied in at the end, finishing off your asymmetric with a lovely handle.

All tools and materials provided. Bring along a big old towel or sheet to wrap your willow in. Wear old clothes. Bring a pack lunch, but teas, coffees and biscuits will be on tap all day too.
